Weld Vases

Making an art of taking discarded materials and turning them into something beautiful, UK-based designer Phil Cuttance has somewhere new for your freshly cut flowers to go.

Made from offcuts collected out of the piles of discarded material at a local plastic fabricator, these vases have a distinctive visual presence that is almost cartoon-like thanks to the stark black and white colour scheme. Each vase is individually hand crafted using a technique called Hot Air Welding, a process usually employed to repair broken plastic parts like car bumpers.
The ABS plastic is cut to shape and then welded together with a bead of contrasting coloured material. Although the sharp geometry of the forms is prismatic and symmetrical, they maintain a hand-made feel thanks to the dynamic nature of the Hot Air Welding process. In a nice finishing touch, each vase is individually numbered on the base.

You’ll find some great photography as well as a thorough documentation of the making process at Phil’s website.
