Unschool me: Jet Packs and Laundry Day

The quest for new and exciting ways to teach and learn is a challenge that all parents face. In managing her own enthusiastically energetic gang, Amida shares her adventures in Journey Into Unschooling.
What happens when makedo enters this equation?
For their first makedo project, the boys were given free reign to create as they saw fit. They had never encountered the makedo parts before, and were not exposed to other creations. The idea soon emerged to make jet packs for their stuffed animals. In a progression that is increasingly amusing, various creatures are fitted out with ever more elaborate flight devices.
Having been introduced to makedo, the next project took on more of a domestic focus. Enter the Power Scrub 2010: a washing machine with built-in coin slot, handle to rotate the drum and clear panel so that you can see your dirties tumbling about.

The kids decided that it was the perfectly hilarious washer for stuffed animals as well, and they’ve been lining up with their coins on bath day ever since.

It appears that Mom was more involved in the planning and construction this time around. There are some clever things going on here, including the considered way in which the machine was built around the form of the drum, and the repurposed knobs for precise control of water temperature and washing cycle.
The Power Scrub 2010 is just what Soaring Squirrel, First Aid Pig, Penguin and Super Stink need after a long day flying about in their jet packs.
