ThermoPlastic

Photographer Simon Duhamel recently won the Lux Awards Grand Prize for his series, ThermoPlastic.

This collection of images takes plastic packaging that has been designed to be invisible, and elevates it from an temporary, disposable item to an object of intrigue and beauty.

With the original packaged product removed, their specific function is no longer identifiable… all we are left with is the faceted surface of transparent and reflective planes.

I found these products to be quite poetic, as they are ephemeral and useless once liberated from the product they are holding, having served their sole purpose. But on the other hand, they are beautifully crafted once you take the time to inspect them closer.

When collecting materials to build our makedo creations, we continue to find new value in these highly engineered disposable items. Simon’s stunning photography highlights how these materials can have beauty and presence in their own right; and it also confirms to us that there is indeed a construction goldmine inside every recycle bin!
