For most of us, when sticky tape gets layered, bunched up and tangled, it is a situation that induces frustration and shortens tempers. This is not the case for Mark Khaisman, a Russian-born architect now living in Philadelphia. In his hands, everyday tape is transformed into unique and visually striking artworks.

Working with standard packing tape, he has refined a technique of layering and manipulating the strips to create dynamic images. These outcomes have a surprising depth to them, particularly when the translucent tape compositions are displayed on backlit panels.
Originally trained as an architect, Mark sees his work as a form of painting; a conversation with light. Each piece takes about a week to complete, and the resolution is reached in a wonderfully poetic revelation:
“I feel a work is completed when I no longer understand how it is done…”
