Refrigerator Igloo
Wednesday, November 3, 2010 at 6:09 PM
Popping up in the middle of Gänsemarkt in Hamburg, Germany is this rather impressive igloo made out of old fridges. Built as a conversation starter, the not-so-hidden agenda behind this project is the way that we waste energy in our everyday lives.

A giant electrical meter displays how much power is being consumed by the quirky installations inside; each one representing aspects of our lives that depend on being plugged in.
From TVs to toasters, fans and of course fridges (322 of them, to be precise), the installation demonstrates how energy efficiency and awareness are the most easily accessible forms of green energy. It’s all sponsored by a local utility company, and the artist behind the work is Berlin-based Ralf Schmerberg.
