What happens when books cannot be recycled? Often doing the rounds of second-hand stores, thrift shops and dusty shelves; many old books have adhesive spines that prevent them from being suitable candidates for recycling. Then answer then becomes… Upcycling!
UK-based furniture designer Laura Cahill has come up with an elegant way to take unwanted books on into bright new lives as household objects.

Her technique is to use a bandsaw to cut the profile, and then mount the pages around a central column. The resulting outcomes feel right at home with contours representing traditional, recognisable forms. Discarded everyday items become valued objects through this low energy transformation.
We look forward to seeing more from Laura Cahill in the future.
