Makedo Making Party: SoD 2010
Monday, July 19, 2010 at 11:46 AM
The table may have been long, but time certainly flew by at the Makedo Making Party. A hive of activity, there were individuals, design professionals and of course children with their parents… all shoulder-to-shoulder under the soaring ceilings of the Royal Exhibition Building in Melbourne.

The range of creations was fantastic to see. Familiar makedo favourites like vehicles, creatures and robots soon emerged from the collection of reclaimed materials.
We observed many different approaches to construction. Some kids took on the role of design director, with parents carefully following instructions. Other makers chose a free flowing path, where the materials themselves dictate form and function.

A crowd favourite was the ever-evolving robot helmet pictured above-left. We also have Ben with his soft-top convertible sports car, and then below a goggle-eyed canine creature takes form.
It was fantastic to see people breathe life into their creations, giving names and personalities to makedo constructions all made out of what had previously been considered waste material from the recycle bin. We will feature more State of Design creations in our I am, I can section over the coming weeks so be sure to keep an eye out for them.

Philip
The session was presided over by our friendly robot Philip, who welcomed people to the Making Party from his position at the head of the Long Table.
We had a great time introducing makedo to people at Design:Made:Trade, and the playful creativity of the event made for some memorable moments. If you’d like to get creative yourself, head over to our shop where kits are available, shipped for free to your door.
Design:Made:Trade may be finished for 2010 but there is still so much happening as a part of Melbourne’s State of Design Festival. If you are lucky enough to be in town, be sure to get involved!
