Kids making a difference

How can we really change for the better? Grade 5 students from schools across Victoria have participated in Making a Difference Day, where workshops and activities saw a growing awareness across a range of environmental issues.
Makedo was there educating about waste and reuse by showing the kids just how many creative opportunities are available in their own recycling bin. Everyone had fun breathing new life into material that might otherwise be thrown away.

The students paired up to use makedo to create an endangered species from cardboard boxes, coffee cups, foam and fabric scraps as well as plastic lids and containers. With hands and minds moving quickly, creations soon emerged that were quirky and full of character.

They were loving the movable parts enabled by makedo – from elephants with swiveling heads to the swaying tentacles of a jellyfish. Ears that wiggle and articulated legs both short and tall made the creatures come alive in the eyes of their creators.
Through this process of creative play, the way these grade 5 students see waste has begun to shift. Reuse enters a conversation that once ran along the lines of “out of sight, out of mind”. Knowing that the future is in their hands sounds pretty good to us.
