From Boxing to Makedo Day

When you’re faced with a huge pile of packaging on Boxing Day, it’s the perfect time to start makedo-ing.  It’s so perfect in fact, that we’ve decided to ‘reclaim’ Boxing Day and rename it Makedo Day!!

To get you inspired and ready for the inaugural Makedo Day we’ve come up with our Top 10 ideas to kickstart the creative process, all from your Boxing Day packaging.

1. Drinking paraphernalia: Make cardboard stubby holders to keep the beers cool, coasters to rest the drinks on, and drink charms so glasses and bottles don’t get mixed up.

2. New Year’s Eve decorations:  Design beautiful lanterns and paper chains using colourful wrapping paper and boxes.
 
3. Piñata: No party is complete without one. Use a box to make the body and left over wrapping paper, bubble wrap and ribbon for the filling.

4. Playful mobile: Give Flensted a run for their money with a reclaimed materials mobile. Think of a theme and design shapes to cut out from different materials such as cardboard and plastics.

5. Never ending steam train: Lots of boxes mean lots of carriages on a playful steam train. Cut out windows, attach wheels and join it together with left over decorative ribbon. As a final touch, use bubble wrap to create billowing, steamy smoke.

6. Paper doll kids game: Cut out cardboard people shapes and then design and cut out clothing and accessories, making the most of the patterns and colours on wrapping paper and colourful boxes.
 
7. Hand fan: If you’re in Australia like us, you’ll know it’s bloody hot over Christmas and New Year so a ‘one of a kind’ fan from left over cardboard boxes will go down a treat.  

8. Photo frame: With all that snap happy behaviour during the festive season you’ll need more photo frames. Layer 5-6 pieces of corrugated cardboard from boxes and create a thick, stylised photo frame that can be a home for your holiday memories.
 
9. Tableware: For a bit of fun create some original tableware. Design matching table runners, placemats, napkin holders and even useful heat mats from layered cardboard.
 
10. Christmas tree ornaments: Use motifs on cards and wrapping paper to create gorgeous Christmas decorations to add to the tree - and to be used again next year.
