Food Rescue

Our goal at makedo is for waste to be given new value - and at a time of the year when indulgence contrasts against need more than ever, we wanted to bring your attention to a fantastic organisation here in Melbourne that truly goes one step further.

FareShare take unused, unwanted food and transform it into meals for those in need.   Providing nutritious meals to the homeless and hungry all across the community, the process is seen as fighting hunger by “rescuing” food from becoming hazardous landfill.

In their first year an impressive 22,000 meals were provided - and less than a decade later they are fast approaching an amazing 1 million meals annually.

The benefits go well beyond easing all those hungry tummies.  Amongst the statistics is one in particular that is also close to home for Australians… an estimated 56 litres of water is saved for every kilogram of recovered food. What does this add up to?  A lot of drops in the ocean -  FareShare divert hundreds of tonnes of edible food from becoming landfill every year.   All of this resource comes from local businesses, markets, caterers, and hospitals.

As with all aid work, the real success is in the smiles and heartfelt gratitude of each individual who receives much needed help.  Seeing the difference this makes on a human scale has an entirely different impact, even when the facts and figures do add up to impressive levels.
