Cardboard comes alive

Referencing the work of kinetic sculptor Theo Jansen, this great range of kinetic toys brings gentle, constructive play together with a strong environmental consciousness.

Named The Savannah Walkers, these critters are the product of CCA (San Francisco) industrial design student Lucas Ainsworth. Making clever use of a fairly complex kinetic mechanism, the Walkers arrive flat-packed and are easily assembled using only folded tabs, slots and tension joints.
The magic happens when you turn a little hand crank, animating the walker as it bobs it’s head along with a mesmerisingly realistic swagger.
We first saw the Savannah Walkers at Design Yearbook, but you really need to see them in full motion:
Be impressed as the 15-minute assembly time is condensed down to 30 seconds in a cute little video clip.
Lucas’ folio can be viewed at Coroflot.
