Can't beat them, join them

Coming to us today from the creative wonderland of Ikat Bag is a fun way to engage kids before an upcoming holiday. There is always anticipation before traveling, and this excitement crosses many borders for all ages. Creating a Customs and Immigration activity can work nicely as a way to inject some fun into one of the less stimulating (but very necessary) aspects of international travel.

The first step is to build some simple cardboard cases with little brass hinges. Important messages are already being communicated as the cases nest within each other to save space in storage. Decorating the cases with flags gets the conversation flowing about countries, international identities and past travel experiences. Name tags and some personal scribbles complete the customisation.

Finally, passports booklets featuring hand-drawn mug shots and fictitious citizenship details enable the next stage of role playing. The kids can take turns being an Airport Officer, stamping passports (at Ikat Bag the stamps came courtesy of Hello Kitty and Thomas), and of course to perform the important task of inspecting luggage for suspicious objects: liquids, pointy objects and smelly socks.
