Bundy On Tap

A particularly interesting initiative has been steadily taking hold at the small country town of Bundanoon, 150km south west of Sydney.   Following an adverse reaction to plans for large scale commercial extraction of water from local supplies, the community have banded together to declare Bundanoon Australia’s First Bottled Water Free Town.

An extensive public education program is in place supported by infrastructure initiatives designed to promote the drinking of tap water.  Officially launched in late September ‘09, reusable bottles and several water stations affectionately named “bubblers” form the public face of the growing movement.

Head over to Bundy On Tap to learn the reasoning behind Bundanoon taking this stance.  Not only are they attempting to address the environmental impact of water as a commercial product, economics also come into play with Australians spending half a billion dollars annually on bottled water.   The website also has an extensive research section covering a range of related issues.   Here is an example of what you can find there: water in a bottle costs an average of 250 times the price of tap water, yet Choice found people were unable to tell the difference between leading branded bottles and Sydney tap water.

Have you ever read the name Evian backwards? An amusing coincidence…
