Bucky's Nightmare

Geodesic domes. Bastions of engineering finesse and marvels of the 20th century futurist genre, we have seen Buckminster Fuller’s domes put to use in playgrounds, architecture, and even the launch of makedo at Melbourne’s State of Design festival.
A refreshing approach to this iconic structural form comes to us from the mind of Paris-based designer Mathieu Lehanneur.

Allowing the form to intentionally deflate during usage, this furniture piece is “a biomorph leather island with a soft inside that reconfigures geometrically under pressure, all the better to give support to each part of the human body.”
It is very interesting to see this subversion, where a partially collapsing structure has the outcome of enhancing comfort.
See Bucky’s Nightmare and other works from Mathieu here.
