a form that seems alive

Found materials bunched together to form an object or sculpture. Think you’ve seen it all before? The work of Japanese-born American Sayaka Ganz has a poetic grace that goes one step beyond. Maybe even two or three.
The fluid movement and poise in her creations is quite breathtaking. Working only with items that have been discarded by others, she combines everyday plastic and metal together to give these objects a second life… to give them a new identity in the sculpture.

Each piece is a personal journey for the artist, and represents a message influenced by the human history of the materials she has collected.
My goal is for each object to transcend its origins by being integrated into an animal form that seems alive.

These works have been constructed following a succinct guiding tenet - that the key to having more people participate in the movement of using waste as art materials, is to make it fun. With surprise and delight in every creation, this talented artist has transformed everyday materials well beyond their former functional lives.
Enjoy browsing through Sayaka’s creations on her website.
We first saw this stunning work at 19Bis.
